It’s the part of life that no one looks forward to but everyone gets to at some point – the end. If your elderly loved one has recently received a health diagnosis that doesn’t have treatment options or if she has reached the age where she wants to go quietly into the good night, you might wonder how and if you can help her through this transition. It may seem overwhelming, but there are some important benefits to letting your loved one receive her end of life care at home.
Four Benefits of Home-based End-of-Life Care
It Allows More for Individual Choices and Decisions.
If your loved one is in a care facility, there will be rules that she just has to follow no matter what. And while those rules are set up to care for her and keep her safe, she might find she wants to do things differently. Perhaps she wants to be able to keep her four cats near her at all times, or she wants to use alternative options for pain management. With an end-of-life care team helping you at home, you and your loved one will be more in control of the decisions that matter to her quality of life as the end draws near.
It Permits More Independence for Your Loved One
By receiving care in her home, your loved one can maintain more independence in the choices of how each day will look. She can decide what to participate in and what to step away from. If she wants to have ice cream for breakfast one day, you don’t need to worry about explaining to a hospital nurse why she should be able to have ice cream (and then that poor nurse trying to find ice cream at 6 am). In your own home, all you need to do is walk to the fridge, scoop out a bowl, and give it to your loved one for breakfast.
It Reduces Stress for Your Loved One
Even the best hospitals and care centers can be stressful, especially if your loved one already has anxiety around medical facilities such as those. There are lots of unknown people, sounds that occur at all hours, and the inability to have all of her favorite comfort items or people or pets there when she’s feeling stressed. Receiving end of life care at home allows your loved one to be surrounded by smells, sights, and sounds that bring comfort and reduce stress levels instead of being bombarded by stress-producing elements.
It Improves Quality of Life
With end-of-life care at home, your loved one has options for alternative care techniques that might bring her comfort and relief that she may not be able to receive while at a hospital or nursing home. Working with your end-of-life care team, you can find resources to provide massage therapy or aromatherapy if that’s what your loved one desires. Being at home also means she’s more likely to be able to spend time with those who might not be able to make it to the hospital like grandchildren or another elderly family member.
Choosing end of life care is an emotional and personal decision that must be made by each family, and there is no wrong answer to what pathway you choose.

My name is Jimmie Stapleton. I am the founder and CEO of Arcy Healthcare. Arcy Healthcare includes Arcy Hospice, Arcy Supportive Care, Arcy Home Health and Arcy at Home.
Arcy Hospice was opened in 2007 to provide care and support for individuals and families facing a life limiting illness. It was established after my wife Ellen, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, had completed her chemo and radiation therapies. At that time, things were looking positive, and we wanted to do something for our community that had been so supportive of our family during her treatments. Unfortunately, the cancer returned a few years later, and she subsequently passed away under our care in 2010.
In the years that followed, I began to see the need to provide the same level of excellent care to patients across the continuum of care. Therefore, we have added a home health division (Arcy Home Health), a palliative care division (Arcy Supportive Care), and a home care division, (Arcy at Home). With the addition of these divisions, we can meet most of the post-acute care needs for you and your family in your home.
I started Arcy Hospice with my wife as my motivation to provide exceptional care and support in the patient’s home, where they are surrounded by family and where they feel most comfortable. I’m proud to say that our staff provides some of the best in home care in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
Please let us know if we can enrich the quality of life for you or a loved one.
Sincerely,
Jimmie Stapleton – Founder and CEO
