Did you know that November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month? If you and your elderly loved one have been considering purchasing a pet for him, here are five great reasons why a senior pet may be the perfect choice for your elderly loved one.
- Senior pets do less damage to the home. Puppies are cute but they chew up everything in sight – from shoes to chair legs to the brand new rugs. Kittens scratch and can struggle to learn how to use the kitty litter. Let’s face it, it’s a good thing those babies are so cute because the damage they can do is not! But a senior pet already knows most house rules and is more than happy to follow them. They aren’t trying out new teeth or have extra energy to burn so they’re much more likely to leave your home alone.
- Senior pets are house-trained. Teaching a puppy to only go potty outdoors is a lot of work and requires a ton of patience. An owner often must spend long periods outside with their pet waiting for it to do its duty, and that can be hard on your senior, especially on rainy or cold days.
- Senior pets need less exercise. Senior pets are often much more content to simply snuggle on the couch with your elderly loved one most of the day. A senior dog may still enjoy daily walks but the walks can often be slow and steady, going at a speed that’s also comfortable for your loved one.
- Senior pets already have their personalities. When purchasing a puppy or a kitten, you don’t know if you’ll get one that loves people and other pets or one that’ll be more of a loner. It’s unknown if they’ll be anxious or silly. When you travel to a shelter to look at senior pets, they’ll be able to tell you what the animal prefers so you can pick one that matches your lifestyle better.
- Senior pets are appreciative. A dog or cat that once had a home and lost it, will be very appreciative of leaving the shelter for a new home with a new human to love and connect with.
Whether old or young, purchasing a pet at any stage is a big deal and all aspects of pet care should be considered before your loved one purchases a pet. If he purchases a senior pet, one of the main things to consider is future (or current) healthcare expenses. Like people, older pets often have more health concerns that need to be addressed than their younger counterparts.
Home Care Providers Can Step in With Some Pet Care Needs
Your loved one should also consider what he can do to care for the grooming and physical needs of his pet. If he’s unsure if he’ll be able to brush out his dog or take him for regular walks, it doesn’t mean he can’t get one. He just might need some assistance. Having an in-home care provider help with grooming or walking is one way to support your loved one’s decision to have a pet. A home care provider can also assist with litter box cleaning for cats or sweeping up fur regularly.
November is a great month to discover the joys of senior pet ownership!

My name is Jimmie Stapleton. I am the founder and CEO of Arcy Healthcare. Arcy Healthcare includes Arcy Hospice, Arcy Supportive Care, MaximaCare Home Health and Arcy at Home.
Arcy Hospice was opened in 2007 to provide care and support for individuals and families facing a life limiting illness. It was established after my wife Ellen, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, had completed her chemo and radiation therapies. At that time, things were looking positive, and we wanted to do something for our community that had been so supportive of our family during her treatments. Unfortunately, the cancer returned a few years later, and she subsequently passed away under our care in 2010.
In the years that followed, I began to see the need to provide the same level of excellent care to patients across the continuum of care. Therefore, we have added a home health division (MaximaCare Home Health), a palliative care division (Arcy Supportive Care), and a home care division, (Arcy at Home). With the addition of these divisions, we can meet most of the post-acute care needs for you and your family in your home.
I started Arcy Hospice with my wife as my motivation to provide exceptional care and support in the patient’s home, where they are surrounded by family and where they feel most comfortable. I’m proud to say that our staff provides some of the best in home care in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
Please let us know if we can enrich the quality of life for you or a loved one.
Sincerely,
Jimmie Stapleton – Founder and CEO
