Celebrate American Adventures Month in August with Your Elderly Loved One

American Adventures Month in August reminds us that adventure is for everyone—regardless of age or ability—and exploring nearby places can boost seniors’ mood, health, and connection to the world around them.

Every August is American Adventures Month. This awareness month was created in the 1950s as a way to encourage people to travel and have adventures in their own country instead of going overseas. There are so many amazing landscapes, historical places, and landmarks in the United States that a person could spend an entire lifetime seeking them all out and still never get them all done.

August is a great time to remember that you don’t have to go far to have an adventure, and as far as we’re concerned, you don’t have to be a specific age to have an adventure. Adventuring is open to all ages and all physical abilities, and it’s a great way to help your senior get out and explore their community, their state, and their country.

Adventures Have Health Benefits for Seniors

Planning an adventure, no matter how simple and small, has great health benefits for seniors.

  • It provides a mood booster. One of the best ways to get out of a funk is to have something to look forward to. Many people get just as much joy out of planning an activity as doing it. From picking out what to wear, to choosing car snacks, to researching where they’re going, your loved one’s mood will be lifted before they even head out the door.
  • It provides physical activity. Your loved one doesn’t need to try mountain biking to have an adventure and get some important exercise. A leisurely walk on a paved path through a national forest promotes physical activity as well as walking through long hallways in a historic library.
  • It provides mental stimulation. Exercising the brain is just as important as exercising the body. Planning an adventure requires your loved one to make strategic decisions (when is the best time of day to leave home, which route is quickest, where will you have lunch). Then getting out and learning new facts and seeing new sights helps the brain to continue to build up its cognitive abilities.
  • It provides connections. Even if your loved one goes alone on an adventure to the local museum, being out in the community and learning about the world around them will help them feel more connected to the area they visit.
  • It provides deeper empathy. Another wonderful aspect of adventuring on any level is that it offers the chance to explore new traditions, cultural offerings, and people that they might not see on their block.

Your Loved One Can Even Adventure Without Leaving Home

If your loved one is homebound, they can still celebrate American Adventures Month at home. Thanks to all of the streaming stations out there, your loved one can find beautiful videos of just about anywhere they’d like to adventure. This can be a great activity for them to participate in with their personal care at home provider. On the next visit from their personal care at home provider, have them plan an “adventure” to somewhere your loved one has never visited in the United States. Their personal care at home provider can help them research different foods from the area, local highlights, and history, and then enjoy watching a documentary or reading online about that area.

Adventuring is a state of mind as much as it is a physical activity, making it a fun activity for everyone.
