Staying active outdoors is great for seniors, but embracing the right safety precautions makes the experience both fun and secure. During warmer weather in particular, seniors should be especially careful. If this is a new exercise regimen, they should also talk with their doctors first. Home care providers can help seniors remember the safety tips that can help them exercise outside safely and confidently.
Focus on Hydration
Hydration is always important for seniors, but it’s even more important when they’re planning to exercise outside. If the weather his hot and humid, they may not notice that they’re sweating and need to replenish the water they’re losing. Home care providers can track seniors’ hydration, reminding them to sip water often.
Dress for the Weather
Proper clothing that fits the weather conditions helps seniors stay comfortable and avoid possible health risks, like overheating in summer or getting too cold in fall and spring. Home care providers can help seniors choose the right clothing for outdoor exercise based on the day is expected weather.
Layers are a great choice because they allow seniors to adjust their clothing easily to accommodate how they’re feeling.
Encourage Supportive Footwear
The right footwear can make or break an outdoor workout. For seniors in particular, the right shoes keep them stable and comfortable while they’re working out. Supportive shoes reduce the risk of tripping, slipping, or developing blisters or sore feet.
Choosing the right shoes from the start helps seniors keep exercising for as long as they want.
Avoid the Hottest Time of the Day
In the warmer months of the year, it’s especially important for seniors to avoid exercising outside during the hottest parts of the day. This is typically from late morning to late afternoon, but it may vary by location. Exercising in the shade is also much cooler than exercising in full sun.
Home care providers can help seniors plan their days around the activities they want to include, so that they’re inside when it’s hottest.
Exercise with Someone
Having someone there with them as they exercise gives seniors an extra layer of support and safety. This is especially important for seniors who have balance concerns, health issues, or who enjoy companionship while they’re moving their bodies.
Home care providers can offer steady, compassionate support while seniors exercise, watching for signs they might need extra help. If seniors want to go to a park or exercise class, home care providers can help with transportation and mobility assistance.
Taking a few extra precautions when they decide to exercise outside gives seniors the opportunity to safely enjoy outdoor activities without endangering themselves. Home care providers can help ensure safety always comes first for aging adults.
Staying active confidently is a big part of aging in place, which is a common goal for many seniors. Having some extra assistance can make difficult daily tasks a lot easier to manage.

My name is Jimmie Stapleton. I am the founder and CEO of Arcy Healthcare. Arcy Healthcare includes Arcy Hospice, Arcy Supportive Care, Arcy Home Health and Arcy at Home.
Arcy Hospice was opened in 2007 to provide care and support for individuals and families facing a life limiting illness. It was established after my wife Ellen, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, had completed her chemo and radiation therapies. At that time, things were looking positive, and we wanted to do something for our community that had been so supportive of our family during her treatments. Unfortunately, the cancer returned a few years later, and she subsequently passed away under our care in 2010.
In the years that followed, I began to see the need to provide the same level of excellent care to patients across the continuum of care. Therefore, we have added a home health division (Arcy Home Health), a palliative care division (Arcy Supportive Care), and two home care divisions, (Arcy at Home and Living Well Senior Care). With the addition of these divisions, we can meet most of the post-acute care needs for you and your family in your home.
I started Arcy Hospice with my wife as my inspiration to provide exceptional care and support in the patient’s home, where they are surrounded by family and where they feel most comfortable. I’m proud to say our dedicated staff provides some of the most respected in-home care in Dallas-Fort Worth, treating every patient like a member of our own family.
Please let us know if we can enrich the quality of life for you or a loved one.
Sincerely,
Jimmie Stapleton – Founder and CEO
