If your senior parent has a hard time leaving the house because of medical conditions they have a high risk of becoming socially isolated. Seniors, especially seniors that struggle to leave the house safely, can find it difficult to maintain social relationships.
However, social relationships, visits from friends and family members, and social engagement are important for good physical and mental health. Seniors that are socially isolated have a higher risk of serious physical and mental health problems.
Companion care at home is one way that your senior mom or dad can get the kind of social support they need to be healthy at home. With companion care at home, your mom or dad will get regular visits from a care provider who will have conversations with them, prepare and share meals with them, and engage in other social activities.
Some of the best social activities for seniors who can’t easily leave the house are:
Virtual Book Clubs
Joining an online book club allows seniors to read and discuss books with others, create social connections, make friends, and enjoy some good discussions. Virtual socialization is very important for seniors who are homebound. Having a computer or tablet, a webcam, and a microphone can help seniors who can’t leave the house still make friends and get social interaction.
Online Classes and Workshops
Many organizations offer virtual classes in various subjects, such as art, music, history, and languages, providing opportunities for learning and social interaction. Some are offered through colleges and universities, others may be offered through local libraries.
Video Calls with Family and Friends
Regular video calls via platforms like Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime help maintain connections with loved ones and prevent feelings of isolation. Family get-togethers held virtually can also allow you to include your senior parent in birthdays and other celebrations, including holidays.
Video Games
Online platforms offer a wide range of games, such as bingo, trivia, and card games, which can be played with friends and family, providing fun and social interaction. There are also video games where seniors can solve puzzles or mysteries, play virtually with other players, and explore fun fantasy universes.
Social Media Engagement
Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter allow seniors to stay connected with friends and family, join interest groups, and participate in community discussions. There is even a community of TikTok stars that are over 65 and gaining huge audiences sharing life advice and wisdom from their homes.
Virtual Volunteer Opportunities
Engaging in volunteer work online, such as tutoring, mentoring, or providing support for nonprofit organizations, can give seniors a sense of purpose and connection. Volunteering is a wonderful way for seniors to find a sense of purpose and a sense of community.
But many seniors don’t realize they don’t need to be able to go on location in order to volunteer. There are lots of organizations that rely on volunteers who do tasks or talk to people from their homes.

My name is Jimmie Stapleton. I am the founder and CEO of Arcy Healthcare. Arcy Healthcare includes Arcy Hospice, Arcy Supportive Care, MaximaCare Home Health and Arcy at Home.
Arcy Hospice was opened in 2007 to provide care and support for individuals and families facing a life limiting illness. It was established after my wife Ellen, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, had completed her chemo and radiation therapies. At that time, things were looking positive, and we wanted to do something for our community that had been so supportive of our family during her treatments. Unfortunately, the cancer returned a few years later, and she subsequently passed away under our care in 2010.
In the years that followed, I began to see the need to provide the same level of excellent care to patients across the continuum of care. Therefore, we have added a home health division (MaximaCare Home Health), a palliative care division (Arcy Supportive Care), and a home care division, (Arcy at Home). With the addition of these divisions, we can meet most of the post-acute care needs for you and your family in your home.
I started Arcy Hospice with my wife as my motivation to provide exceptional care and support in the patient’s home, where they are surrounded by family and where they feel most comfortable. I’m proud to say that our staff provides some of the best in home care in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
Please let us know if we can enrich the quality of life for you or a loved one.
Sincerely,
Jimmie Stapleton – Founder and CEO
