Hospice vs. Palliative Care?

Did you know that all hospice agencies provide palliative care? That is, the focus is on comfort, not cure.

The key goals of palliative care are:

  • To enhance the quality of life of patient AND family
  • To provide pain relief and symptom management
  • To use a team approach, integrating the clinical, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects of care
  • To regard dying as a normal process, neither hastening nor postponing it

If that description sounds just like hospice care, that’s because it is just like hospice care.  Hospice is simply a specific type of palliative care.  Palliative care is available to anyone with a chronic illness, while hospice is only for those with a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months or less.  So in other words, all hospice is palliative, but not all palliative care is hospice.

If you or someone you love is suffering from high levels of pain or uncontrolled symptoms, please call us and tell us about your situation. We are committed to improving the quality of life for people with serious illness.  Let us help you.
